Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first session like?

Your first therapy session may feel different from the appointments that follow because it gives you and your therapist a chance to get to know each other and discuss how you might work together. Your therapist will likely ask what brought you to therapy, what symptoms or concerns you are experiencing, and which parts of your life are not going as well as you would like. They may also ask about your childhood, education, relationships, living situation, and work history to better understand your background. Later sessions will usually focus more closely on the concerns, experiences, and goals identified during this first meeting. Therapy typically takes time, so the first session is less about finding an immediate solution and more about beginning to develop a relationship that can support lasting change.

What age groups do you work with?

As a general rule, we work with anyone over the age of 13. However, adolescents under the age of 18 require a direct referral from a current clinician to determine the suitability of the clinician and patient match, and a consultation with the patient and their parents to set expectations of the clinical boundaries and scope of practice.

How does confidentiality work?

Confidentiality means that what you share with your therapist is generally kept private and cannot be disclosed without your permission. This privacy helps create a safe space where you can speak openly about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. However, there are certain legal and safety-related exceptions, such as when someone is at serious risk of harm, when abuse or neglect must be reported, or when records are required by law. Your therapist may also discuss your care with other professionals if you give written consent. At the beginning of therapy, your therapist should explain their confidentiality policy and answer any questions you may have about how your information is protected.

Do I need any tabletop or gaming experience for the play-based track?

No. The gaming and play-based track is built to work for complete beginners — no dice experience required. See Gaming & Play-Based Therapy for more.

Do you offer telehealth?

The general answer is no, we do not offer telehealth.

The more nuanced answer is that telehealth is available for established patients who have been with the practice for at least a year. Certain exceptions apply—including inclement weather and personal or family sickness.

How does scheduling and cancellation work?

We are working on bringing our patient portal online as quickly as possible. Scheduling will be handled through that portal.

Cancelation or rescheduling requires 24 hours’ advance. You will be responsible for the entire fee if cancellation is less than 24 hours. The fee is $125.00 and cannot be paid for by insurance or an HSA.
